Mark Nylen slams a goal while Lake Orion puts the squeeze on shooters to prevail in a close game

Mark Nylen scored the game winner with 5:44 left in the third period, as Lake Orion won against Birmingham Unified 3 - 1 at Birmingham Ice Arena on Saturday. Neither team managed to score in the first period. With no one scoring in the second period both defenses were solid. In the third period, with defenses wearing down, Lake Orion outscored Birmingham Unified three to one and took the lead to claim the late win.

In the third period, Lake Orion made it happen on the ice when Ryan Szydlowski got a goal with 17:46 left on the clock. Marc Kerchner got the assist on the goal. In reply, Birmingham Unified's Michael Madigan got the puck in the goal with 15:36 left on the clock. Adam Susalla assisted on the goal, evening the score at 1 to 1. Returning fire, Lake Orion's Mark Nylen got a goal with assists from Nolan Page and Kurt Latshaw with 5:44 left in the period, to nab the lead at 2-1. Birmingham Unified's fate was sealed. Applying pressure on the empty net, Drew Casey put the puck between the empty pipes with an assist from Mark Nylen and Connor Moesta with 1:02 left on the clock, to go further ahead.

Mark Nylen netted one goal for Lake Orion and also had one point.

Showing a super performance, Lake Orion's Logan Aldrich finished with 34 saves for the win.

Adding to their victory, Lake Orion went 1-for-2 on power plays. Birmingham Unified went 0-for-4.

Birmingham Unified finished the game with a record of 9-5.
