MARQUETTE - Credit an efficient power play for keeping the Marquette Senior High School hockey team's record perfect on Tuesday night.

The Redmen netted three power-play goals, two coming on the same five-minute major, to pull out a 4-3 victory over Houghton at Lakeview Arena in Marquette.

The game got wild and woolly in the closing minutes, according to MSHS coach Doug Garrow with the Redmen (3-0) holding a 5-3 lead.

Houghton's Dawson McKay backhands the puck past Marquette's goalie Dylan Sibilsky for the first goal of the game during the first period at Lakeview Arena in Marquette Tuesday evening.

"We had a major called on us with 4:40 left, so that was going to be a 5-on-4 to finish the game," Garrow said, adding that Houghton pulled within 5-4 with 3:33 left with a goal by senior Alan Jurmu.

Then they had a minor called on them, so it made it 4 on 4, then they pulled their goalie so it was 5 on 4 again."

In all that, no more goals were scored as Marquette sophomore goalie Dylan Sibilsky finished with 14 saves. Houghton (1-1) got 24 stops from sophomore Will Stier.

The Gremlins scored the only goal of the first period when sophomore Dawson McKay scored with about 5 1/2 minutes before the intermission.

Marquette tied it just 1:14 into the second on a power-play goal by freshman Luke Beerman, though Houghton retook the lead when senior defenseman Cole Jepsen snuck one in not quite 10 minutes later.

Then the turning point came later in the second on a Houghton's major penalty as MSHS cashed in twice 2:17 apart on goals by seniors Donny Schultz and Jake Phillips to make it 3-2 Marquette.

The Redmen added insurance around the midpoint of the final period on a goal by sophomore Joe Philips which proved to come in handy.

Redmen senior Kristian Jackson and Gremlins seniors Kenny Gremaux and Reid Pietila each had two assists.
