Cranbrook Thanksgiving Tournament at Wallace Arena in Bloomfield Hills

The annual Cranbrook Thanksgiving Tournament at Wallace Arena in Bloomfield Hills gave fans a chance to gorge on quality high school hockey.

Coming away with the tourney championship was Brighton, the No. 1-ranked team in Division 1, earning a 1-0 win Saturday against Livonia Stevenson (No. 2 in D2).

The Spartans opened the two-day extravaganza on the winning side of a 6-2 score, Friday against Cranbrook.

“For this team to play it third game in four days and to play the top team in the state like that, well, it’s hard not to be proud of the effort we gave,” Stevenson head coach David Mitchell said about the loss to the Bulldogs. “Brighton is so fast, they have some great players and are really well-coached, it was a great high school hockey game.”

Brighton scored the contest’s only goal in the first period, with Ben Peterson beating Stevenson goalie Will Tragge (22 saves). It was Tragge’s first loss after three victories to open the season.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, Bulldogs netminder Logan Neaton was a little bit better. He stopped all 24 shots he saw.

In the victory against the tournament host Cranes, Julian Decina tallied two goals and two assists as the Spartans built a 4-0 lead and coasted from there.

Other Stevenson goals were recorded by Cody Ciesliga, Morgen Gray, Logan Dunham and Brendan Hall. For Decina, Gray, Ciesliga and Dunham the goals were career firsts with the Spartans.

“To play a team with the history of Cranbrook is an honor for sure, and to come into their place with a young team and play the way we did tonight, we are obviously pleased,” Mitchell said. “We still have a ways to go and much room for improvement, but we seem to be getting better each time out, which is a good sign and a testament to the players.”

Salem rocked

Salem, meanwhile, dropped a pair of games at the tournament and remained winless (0-3) entering Wednesday’s KLAA South Division opener against Livonia Franklin.

The Rocks went up 1-0 early Friday against Brighton, with Colin Goleniak notching his first of the season from Matt Schaumburger (back from an injury suffered against Trenton) and goalie Austin Goleniak.

But the No. 1 team in the state rallied in the third period to win going away.

The next day against the tourney host Cranes, the teams played a fairly even contest (Salem was outshot just 34-29) much of the way but Cranbrook skated to a 7-2 victory.

Marty Mills and Logan Sowa (on the power play) scored for Salem, with assists to Schaumburger, Colin Goleniak and Tyler German.

Salem also lost junior defenseman Sean McCormack to an arm injury; he is expected to be sidelined several weeks, coach Ryan Ossenmacher said.
