MUSKEGON — Casey LaRue scored three goals for Dow, and the Chargers scored five times in the second period to break open Friday’s hockey game against Muskegon Mona Shores on their way to a 6-3 victory at Lakeshore Ice Arena.

“Casey always plays hard and makes his own luck,” said Dow coach Dick Blasy. “He does a nice job screening and tipping shots and crashing the net.”

After a scoreless opening period, Dow outscored the Sailors 5-2 in the second, and traded single goals with them in the third to complete the scoring.

“I thought (Mona Shores) had the edge after the first period. Even though it was 0-0, I thought they outplayed us,” said Blasy. “Things tilted our way in the second and third periods.”

Josh Storer opened the Dow scoring with an assist from Vi Lobo, while LaRue followed with back-to-back goals, Brendan Holbrook and Jack Kivi tacked on unassisted goals, and LaRue capped off his hat trick with a third-period goal with an assist from Holbrook.

Brendan Sanders assisted on each of LaRue’s first two goals, while Joey Johnson was credited with an assist on his first goal, and Holbrook helped set up his second goal.

Seamus Belisle had 25 saves in goal for Dow.

“We always talk about the fact that hard work doesn’t require any talent whatsoever, and I thought all the boys played hard tonight,” said Blasy.

The Chargers (2-1) play today at Forest Hills Central.
