Midland Dow broke open a scoreless game as the Chargers scored five goals in the second period on their way to a 6-3 victory over Muskegon Mona Shores.

Midland Dow's Casey LaRue scored back-to-back goals in the second on his way to a hat trick performance. Other goal scorers for the Chargers included Josh Storer, Brendan Holbrook and Jack Kivi.

Mona Shores' Zac Cuthbertson lit the lamp twice and teammate Hunter Meyersadded a goal of his own in the loss.

Midland Dow coach Dick Blasy talked about what changed from the opening period to the second period for his team.

"We had way too many penalties in that first period and we were caught on our heels to start the game," Blasy said. "Did a better job of keeping our sticks on the ice in the second period and of moving our skates."

Despite taking a lot of penalties in the first, the Chargers penalty kill unit did a masterful job keeping the Sailors off the board.

On the offensive end, Midland Dow was aggressive and attacked the net often, leading to many close scoring chances.

Midland Dow won't get much time to rest as it faces Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, Muskegon Mona Shores hosts Saginaw Heritage Saturday.
