POWER PLAY GOALS SINK EAGLETS

Flint Powers traveled to Orchard Lake to play St. Mary’s, which was coming off a huge overtime victory over Cranbrook the night before. For 33:59, St. Mary’s dominated the Chargers until a goal with time expiring at the end of the second period gave Powers a charge that carried over to the third period when the blue and orange scored three more times to claim victory.

The first period belonged to the Eaglets as they opened the scoring at 9:13 with an even strength goal by forward Michael Stewart with assists from defensemen Basil Shea and Keaton Strunk. Orchard Lake lit the lamp again at 1:20, when forward Nick Cloud scored with assists going to Basil Shea and Keaton Strunk. 2-0 Orchard Lake at the end of the first period.

The teams battled furiously for much of the second period with nothing to show for it until 00:57 when Joey Maloney gave the Eaglets a three-goal advantage with a power play goal. Nick Cloud and Hunter Baudino assisted on the Maloney goal. With time winding down, the Chargers were able to mount a rush resulting in a Mason Weiss goal as time expired. Senior forwards Conor Witherspoon and Brendan Smith had the assists. The Chargers went to the locker room down 3-1 but with momentum as a result of the last second goal.

In the third, the Chargers were able to take advantage of Orchard Lake penalties to make it a game. Senior forward Brendan Smith cut the Eaglets lead to one goal by scoring a power play goal at 11:48 of the third. Line mates Mason Weiss and Conor Witherspoon assisted. A little over three minutes later, with the Chargers on the power play again, Conor Witherspoon unleashed a shot from the right point that found the upper corner to tie the game at 8:23 of the third. Senior defenseman Jake Polakowski and Brendan Smith assisted on the Witherspoon goal. Shortly thereafter, at 7:08, the Chargers’ completed their comeback when Cam Conover one-timed a blast from the slot on a perfect pass from Conor Witherspoon (playmaker). Junior forward Mason Weiss also assisted on Conover’s power play game winner.

It doesn’t get any easier for Powers as they travel to Hazel Park to take on the always-tough U of D Jesuit Cubs on Friday.
