Flint Powers faced off against Midland High School in an important SVL match-up at the Crystal Field House last night as the Chargers’ quest for a Saginaw Valley League championship continues.

Midland drew first blood at 8:09 of the first period when junior forward Matthew Gross beat the Powers goaltender from the bottom of the left circle after the Powers defensemen collided with each other. Powers would even the score at 5:10 when junior forward Christian Wentworth score a short-handed goal. Sophomore forward Luke Evo had the sweet assist on Wentworth’s goal. With 59 seconds remaining in the first, Powers took the lead when Luke Evo buried one with the assistance of senior forwards Brendan Smith and Conor Witherspoon.

The Chargers scored three quick goals at the beginning of the second period to give themselves some breathing room. At 14:57, Brendan Smith lit the lamp. Assists went to Luke Evo and senior defenseman Mac Diver. Twenty-six seconds later, junior forward Cam Conover (Welcome back, Cam!) scored the first of his two goals on assists from line mates Sam Lechel and Cam Lieffers. Just over a minute later, senior forward Jon Thomas took it to the house with help from defensemen Hans Hering and Mac Diver (his second). Just over a minute after the Thomas goal, Midland senior forward Greg Landis found the back of the net. Landis was assisted by senior forward Brendan Witt and sophomore forward Chris Guillemette. Cam Conover returned to the well at 4:04 for his second goal of the game. Conover was assisted by Conor Witherspoon (his second) and Sam Lechel (his second). Senior forward Joe Schunck made 7-2 in favor of Powers at 3:12 on a beautiful feed from Conor Witherspoon (playmaker).

Powers senior defenseman Garrett Johnson closed out the scoring at 3:26 of the third with his 11th goal of the season. Johnson was assisted by Brendan Smith (playmaker) and senior forward Chase Knoblock.

The Chargers will be back at it on Saturday for a matinee against a tough Division 1 ranked Lake Orion squad.
