STELLAR GOALTENDING AND TIGHT DEFENSE KEYS TO VICTORY

Flint Powers faced off against Lake Orion Saturday afternoon at the Crystal Field House in a game that featured play-off level intensity. In a physically demanding contest, Flint Powers played tight defense and sophomore goaltender Parker Rey pitched his third consecutive shut-out to lead the Chargers to victory over Division 1 seventh-ranked Lake Orion.

From the opening face-off, the Dragons were breathing fire as they attempted to pound the Chargers into submission. However, the Chargers were able to draw blood early in the first, when senior forward Conor Witherspoon sent a no-look pass from the corner to senior forward Jon Thomas who knocked it past the Dragons goaltender at 15:34 of the first period. Senior forward Chase Knoblock also assisted on the Thomas goal. For the remainder of the period, the two teams went at it tooth, nail and claw to no avail as the period ended 1-0 in favor of Powers.

It was more of the same in the second period as the teams battled for time, space and scoring opportunities. Near the end of the period at 4:46, the Chargers senior defenseman Hans Hering took a pass from Conor Witherspoon in the left circle and rifled a hard wrister past the Lake Orion netminder on the short side. Forward Chase Knoblock (his second) assisted on the Hering goal. The teams would go to intermission with Powers ahead 2-0.

Neither team could get anything going offensively in the third as the players battled furiously. Both teams, as well as the crowd, were physically and emotionally drained after this one. A long, tough, hard-hitting old time hockey game in which the Chargers prevailed 2-0.

It doesn’t get any easier for Powers as they will face the Midland Dow Chargers on Wednesday in a game which will determine the Saginaw Valley Conference championship. The puck drops at 6:00 p.m.
