Flint Powers 4, Dow High 3

FLINT — Flint Powers came back from a 3-1 deficit in the third period to defeat Dow High 4-3 in Saginaw Valley League hockey on Friday. With the win, Powers clinched first place in the SVL.

After a scoreless first period, Casey LaRue and Jon Baillargeon scored to put Dow up 2-0 in the second period. Powers then scored to cut Dow’s lead to 2-1 going into the third period.

Shane Astrike scored early in the third to extend Dow’s lead to 3-1. Powers then stormed back with three goals, getting the game-winner with just 33 seconds left.

Baillargeon, Astrike, Joey Johnson, Brendan Holbrook, and Jeremy Brookens each had an assist for Dow. Dow’s Jeremy Slasor made 33 saves. Powers outshot Dow 37-20.

“The loss is really bittersweet,” said Dow coach Dick Blasy. “The boys played extremely hard. Powers is an outstanding team and yet we had a really good chance to win it. Powers put us on our heels as the game got near the end.

“Powers is considered the second best high school team in the state of Michigan,” he added. “All our boys competed and it just shows what you can do when you play really strong team defense and have good goaltending.”

Dow (14-9-1 overall, 5-2 SVL) clinched second place in the league and hosts Big Rapids on Friday.
