Houghton keeps Classic

By The Daily Mining Gazette 12/29/2014, 11:30am EST

HOUGHTON - The Houghton Gremlins took 11 penalties over the course of the title game of the MacInnes Classic. Despite that large number, the Gremlins were able to jump ahead of the Hancock Bulldogs in the second period and stay there, winning the championship game, 4-3.

Houghton got two key goals and an assist from tournament Most Valuable Player Reid Pietila to secure the win. Without those goals, however, the game might have been very different.

"He is so important because he scores goals," said Gremlins coach Corey Markham. "He is a goal scorer and he has a heavy shot. He means the world to us because he is so strong on the puck."

Pietila's first tally came 10:50 into the middle period when he got loose, skated in alone and beat Hancock goaltender Dawson Kero.

His second came almost four minutes later when he tipped a pass off a defender past Kero for the fourth Gremlins goal at 14:43.

Bulldogs' coach Dan Rouleau started Kero, a freshman, for the second straight game, and the move appeared to be a smart one early, as the team rallied in front of their young netminder.

Matt Sanregret put the Bulldogs on the board first with a breakaway goal just 6:19 in. Dylan Paavola fed him the lead pass.

"We tried to sneak a guy every now and then," said Rouleau. "Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. You have to take a chance."

The game remained in Hancock's favor as the Gremlins paraded to the penalty box until late in the period.

Cale Markham got loose after picking up a puck at center ice. He skated in on Dawson Kero and beat him cleanly with a shot over the right shoulder.

The Bulldogs took a couple of penalties early in the second period, giving the Gremlins a five-on-three advantage. After a shot from Jonathan Bostwick kicked out to the left point, assistant captain Riley McKay blasted a slap shot past Kero at 1:56.

"Riley has some offensive ability," said Markham. "He hasn't scored a lot this year. We expect in the second half it's going to come more and more."

After the Gremlins were awarded a penalty shot when Paavola covered the puck in the crease, Gremlins captain Tristan Foltz hit the post and out.

With Gremlins forward Spencer Donnelly off for cross checking early in the third, the Bulldogs cut the lead to two when Danny Hill took a pass from Paavola and wired a wrist shot over Gremlins goaltender Marcus Gloss' shoulder 5:20 into the third.

Just 69 seconds later, Bulldogs captain Hunter Kero sprang out of the defensive zone, took a cross-ice pass and skated in alone on Gloss, beating him with a wrist shot at 6:29.

Both goaltenders made a number of key saves over the remainder of the third period until Rouleau pulled Kero for an extra attacker with 1:11 remaining.

Pietila had a great chance to pick up his second hat trick late in the period, but Bulldogs defenseman Jack Fenton dropped to his knees to block the shot and keep his team within one.

Gloss, Foltz, Paavola, Markham, and Hunter Kero were all named to the All-Tournament Team along with Calumet forward Ryan Nelson.
