FHNE Advances to Division 2 State Semi-Finals

Chase Lebster's goal with 10 seconds left in the third overtime saw the Forest Hills Northern/Eastern hockey team top perennial power Marquette 2-1 in a Division 2 quarterfinal on Tuesday.

Lebster blocked a Marquette defenseman's shot and took it the length of the ice in a two on one.

"The defenseman let him take the shot and he roofed it," FHN/E coach Thomas Bissett said. "It went bar down. He just went in ... he had that look in his eye taking it up the ice. He's been doing it all year.

"We had some good pressure on them in the second and third overtime. They controlled the majority of the third period and first overtime. I don't know if it was a second wind or a burst of energy, but we came out strong."

Senior goalie Ty Kitchen made a career-high 60 saves, allowing the lone goal to Marquette's Jake Phillips.

"He was on and you could tell right away," Bissett said. "You could tell he was going to have a special night. He kept us in the game, made big saves. He's another one who's had a great playoff. He's had a very good season.

"We played a tough schedule by choice. We wanted to be prepared for postseason. His record may not be as great as other goalies in the area, but game in and game out he's been one of the best goalies around."

Bissett said the win is one of the biggest in school history.

"There's been two other teams that have been to the final four," Bissett said. "I was a co-coach when we lost to Trenton in 2008 and in 2012 the team lost to Brother Rice.

"We have four seniors, nine sophomores, two freshman ... for these guys to step up the way they have this postseason has made it an awesome second half to the year. They've taken the next step and played some great hockey."

Trey Dyer scored FHN/E's first goal, with assists going to Wyatt Radakovitz and Josh Boverhoff.

Bissett said Noah CottrellMatt Pakkala and Josh Boverhoff came up big on the blue line for FHN/E.

"They really carried the load," Bissett said. "Those three played a lot of minutes tonight and shut down Marquette's top guys who have had close to 60 points this season.

"Obviously the whole team played well, but I'm just really proud of how those guys played."

FHN/E plays Romeo, a team it lost to 6-2 earlier this season, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Plymouth.

"It wasn't a great game earlier this season," Bissett said. "I think with our experience now and how we've played in the playoffs we'll be ready.

"I think we've really stepped up since we played them in mid February. We've grown a lot since then."

Wyatt Radakovitz triggered a big celebration on the ice Saturday, the kind of celebration where sticks, gloves and other hockey equipment get tossed around with joy.

His goal, which came 4 minutes, 38 seconds into overtime, gave the combined Forest Hills Northern/Eastern team a 3-2 overtime win over Mona Shores in Division 2 regional final action on Saturday.

The Forest Hills co-op squad, which has a 16-11-1 record, travels to Gaylord on Tuesday. It will face Marquette for the right to move on to the Division 2 state semifinals.

The last regional won by this team came in 2012, when Forest Hills Northern/Eastern shut out Mona Shores 1-0 for the title.

"One of my assistant coaches said there's nothing like winning in overtime," Forest Hills Northern/Eastern coach Thomas Bissett said. "Helmets, gloves and sticks were everywhere. My guys played a great game and it just went back and forth with Mona Shores."

Zach Tilden put Mona Shores (15-12-1) on the board almost 14 minutes into the game, off an assist by Sawyer Jensen and Connor Edlund. The Forest Hills team answered and made it 1-1 at the 16:40 mark when Chase Lebster tied the score off assists by Ian Famulak and Josh Boverhof.

Spencer Anderson put Mona Shores up 2-1 just over six minutes into the second period, but the Forest Hills team responded when Lebster fed Nathan Nickelson to tie things up at 2-2.

It stayed that way until overtime, when Radakovitz scored.

Forest Hills Northern/Eastern faces a team that has a 22-4 overall record and a top-five ranking in Division 2.

"Marquette has had a very strong season," Bissett said. "Our last ranking was 15th. But I have a very good feeling as a group. There were a lot of pictures and a lot of smiles."

The Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern/Eastern boys hockey team scored three third-period goals to claim a 4-1 win over Portage Central in Thursday's Division 2 regional semifinal matchup at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo.

Forest Hills senior right wing Chase Lebster tallied two goals and two assists, including the go-ahead goal early in the third.

"Chase has been doing this the whole season, and he just stepped up when we needed it," Forest Hills coach Tom Bissett said. "He's doing what a senior leader should do -- lead the team when we need him the most.

"Once we got some momentum to end the second, we came out in the third and continued to pour it on.

"I'm proud that our guys continued to work hard and capitalize on our chances."

Derek Hesse gave Portage Central a 1-0 lead in the first period on a pass from Davin Renda, and the Mustangs held that advantage until late in the second period, when Forest Hills' Nathan Nickelson knotted the game at 1.

"Overall, our guys competed really hard tonight," Portage Central coach Brian Bellware said. "They had several great opportunities throughout the game, but there were just a couple breakdowns in the third that cost us."

Trey Dyer added the fourth goal for Forest Hills, and Ty Kitchen made 22 saves.

Portage Central goalie Alex Hufford was peppered with 53 shots, but the senior first-year starter stood tall and kept his team in the game.

Despite registering more than twice as many shots as Portage Central, Forest Hills trailed for the majority of the game.

"The coaches were staying positive and trying to get bodies in front of the net, and it was just a matter of getting pressure and having our second guys drive the net and get rebounds," Bissett said.

Forest Hills (15-11-1) advances to play Mona Shores in Saturday's regional final at Southside Arena.

"Mona Shores is a very good team and has been for a long time," Bissett said. "It'll be a good test for us to play solid defense and capitalize on our chances.

"We have some guys that can score goals, but we just have to be patient."

Portage Central finishes its season at 11-15, and the Mustangs graduate five seniors, inlcuding Hufford, Hesse and captain Renda.

"In my opinion, he's a complete player and impactful on both ends of the ice," Bellware said of Renda. "He was the heart and soul of our team.

"Everyday in practice and in games, he competed as hard as he could. He had a positive impact on the underclassmen, and they're going to grow into good leaders because of him."
