Picks are in for Week Three's slate of games

Ah, we have been off to a great start with this Dream Team of the Week series. Hopefully, you all enjoy this segment as much as I am, keying in on players from around the state and highlighting ones to watch in upcoming matchups.

Austin Combs was stellar last week with a performance that will be tough to top this season. The Milford junior totaled six goals and four assists in a three-game outing sandwiched around the Thanksgiving break. We’ll keep a running total of our top performers from the ‘19-20 season and see what new selections can crack the top three next week.

Gearing up for Week Three, players that came out of the gate strong certainly still have the hot hand while others who may have started a bit slower are now looking to pick things up. Lots of options on the table over the next couple days, let’s get into it.

Week Three

Monday, December 2nd - Sunday, Dec. 8th

FORWARD, Senior Dylan Dooley, Detroit Catholic Central

SCHEDULE: 12/ 4 vs Divine Child, 12/5 vs. CHSL, 12/7 vs. CHSL

The 6-foot-2 power forward started out with two goals and an assist in CC’s first two games of the season, but was held in check over the next two games against elite opponents in Culver Academy and Brother Rice. Dooley is a talented scorer whose awesome around the net and I think he’s too good be kept off the scoresheet for too long. He’s due for a big week and certainly capable of breaking out over the next few days as the Shamrocks have three games on the schedule. Expect Dooley to be a major factor in the next couple days — and the rest of the season — for Catholic Central.

FORWARD, Junior Nathan Milanowski, East Grand Rapids

SCHEDULE: 12/6 vs. Toledo St. Francis (OH), 12/7 vs. Farmington United

Milanowski has a goal in each of EGR’s first three games of the season and according to their team page, has taken twice as many shots as anyone else on the roster. The 5-foot-9 forward will be a major factor in the Pioneers’ success this season and they face two good challenges this weekend at home. Milanowski will have to be at his best for East to be in the mix in both of these games and I’ll take the aggressive shooter to pick up a couple points.

FORWARD, Junior Mason Kelly, Forest Hills Central

SCHEDULE: 12/6 @ Walled Lake Northern, 12/7 @ St. Frances Cabrini

The 6-foot-1 junior looked awesome in the Rangers’ 5-3 come-from-behind win over EGR on Friday. He’s factored in on five of the nine goals FHC has produced through its first four games and when he’s active in the offense, it fuels the rest of the team. Jenison managed to keep Kelly — and the rest of the Rangers — off the scoresheet in a 2-0 win on Saturday but I think this week presents two great matchups for the left-handed forward and his offense to explode on the road.

DEFENSEMAN, Senior Ashton Bol, Grand Rapids Christian

SCHEDULE: 12/6 @ Allen Park, 12/7 @ Wyandotte Roosevelt

I’ve been pretty outspoken about Bol this season as being one of the premier D in the state and after catching a few regular-season games, he’s definitely living up to those expectations. Everything the Eagles do runs through Bol, whether it be on the PP or even strength and his ability to defend is exceptional. Bol had a monster game last Monday against East Kentwood and I think he could take over both games this week in a similar fashion. Give me the big lefty to control the game and completely take over in two road games on the east side.

DEFENSEMAN, Junior Nick Justice, Livonia Stevenson

SCHEDULE: 12/6 vs. Country Day, 12/7 @ Canton

As a first-year guy, Justice has the potential to have the biggest impact on his team than any other player in the state in their first high school season. He’s a big playmaker on the backend and adds a much-needed wrinkle to Stevenson that was already loaded with talented forwards up front. He’s got six points in his first three high school games — which included tough matchups against Lake Forest Academy and Brother Rice — and if he can produce against the likes of those teams, he should continue to play a significant role in this week’s games and beyond.

GOALIE, Junior Jimmy Pietila, Houghton

SCHEDULE: 12/3 @ Hancock, 12/6 vs. Traverse City Central, 12/7 vs. Hartland

He’s started out the season with a 2-0 record and turned away 43-of-45 shots in those contests. I don’t expect him to start all three games this weekend, especially with the Friday-Saturday puck drops being within 16 hours of each other, but crazier things have happened. I do think he’s capable of big performances against some of the aggressive offenses that Houghton will face this week and if the Gremlins earn multiple wins through this stretch of the schedule, it will be largely because of their netminder.

Love the picks? Let’s have some fun on Twitter and tell me who I should be taking in the Dream Team of the Week.
