Game Recap- Powers vs. Chelsea 1-4-2020

The Powers Catholic Chargers Varsity hockey team was home at Iceland Arena on Saturday afternoon to face-off against the Chelsea Chiefs. They didn’t disappoint the near capacity crowd, filled with Chargers fans and Alumni by routing the Chiefs 7-1 and improving their overall record to 5-2-2.  Powers would find a variety of different ways to score in this game and six different chargers found the back of the net.  Sophomore, Andrew Wurtz would open the scoring less than 5 minutes into the contest when he pounced on a juicy rebound from a point shot by Senior, Tim Washburn. Senior, Tommy Shubeck would also assist on the goal by Wurtz, who was in the right spot to bang in the loose rebound. Then a shot by Senior, Joey Carpenter, handcuffed Chelsea Junior goalie, Harrison Lantis from a sharp angle and trickled in to give Powers a 2-0 lead. Junior, Tyler Lawrence would assist on the Carpenter goal.  Chelsea would counter with a power play goal with less than 4 minutes to play in the first period, cutting the lead to 2-1. Powers would out-shoot Chelsea 11-7 in the first frame.

Powers would play a very inspiring second period, as their effective forecheck and aggressive play would pin the Chiefs in their defensive zone seemingly for the entire period.  Powers would get the first of three goals in the period, shorthanded as Senior Tim Washburn picked up a clearing attempt at center ice and out hustled the Chelsea defense and beat Lantis extending the Chargers lead to 3-1. Junior, Alex Washburn would provide the only assist on the shorthanded tally.  Less than 2 minutes later, Senior Joey Carpenter found Sophomore Jacques Lavrack all alone in the slot and he rifled a shot past Lantis, making the score 4-1. Tyler Lawrence added an assist as the Chiefs turned over the puck deep in their own end.  Powers continued the relentless forechecking pressure and extended the lead 2 minutes later as Tyler Lawrence would add his 3rd helper of the game, feeding Joey Carpenter, breaking to the net. Carpenter would then deflect the pass by Lawrence for his second goal of the game perfectly, high over the glove of the goalie Lantis. Sophomore, Nolan Salayko, would add an assist on the goal that ended the scoring in the 2nd period and the day for Lantis as he was replaced by Freshman goalie, Ben Mitts. Powers outshot Chelsea 16-3 in the second period.

The dominating style of play would continue throughout the third session, as Powers kept the pressure on.  Sophomore, Brenden Tarpening, would score a pretty goal on a 2 on 1 break when he collected a pass from Sophomore Ben Siwek and went in greeting Mitts with a back hand deke, tucking the puck into the corner of the net 4 minutes into the 3rd stanza.  Nolan Salayko would pick up his 2nd assist of the game on the goal that had the arena buzzing!  The scoring for the game would end 2 minutes later as Powers Senior, Tommy Shubeck, would earn his second point of the afternoon by deflecting a hard-rising shot by Sophomore, Luke Kramer, down and between the wickets of Mitts to make it 7-1. Andrew Wurtz would get his second point of the game with the assist on Shubeck’s goal. The shots in the 3rd period was 10-5 -in favor of Powers- and for the game, Powers dominated the shots 37-15.

Powers Coach, Travis Perry, commented that “It was good to see so many guys contributing today and scoring different kinds of goals. It’s amazing what we can do if we keep our feet moving, crash the net and play as a team for three periods!” Powers will be away at Davison for a huge league game on Wednesday night.
