Game Recap- Powers vs. Detroit Country Day (DCD)

The Powers Catholic Chargers Varsity hockey team was home to take on the Yellow Jackets of Detroit Country Day for a non- league game at Iceland Arena Friday evening. DCD would prevail 2-0, dropping Powers record to 13-7-2 overall.

Powers Senior goalie Brent Zloto stood tall and made several quality saves on a barrage of shots from DCD during the first period. DCD carried a majority of the play and kept Powers in the defensive zone.  Powers could only muster 4 shots on DCD net-minder Greg Enright in the first stanza while DCD peppered Zloto with 14, many quality scoring chances.

The second period would see much of the same style as DCD kept the pressure on Powers with a good fore-check, but the difference was Zloto as he kept the game 0-0 making many quality saves.  DCD would have 2 power play opportunities during the second frame, but the Powers penalty killers and Zloto kept the game scoreless moving into the 3rd period.  DCD out-shot Powers 16-3 in the second period.

The third period saw much the same type of game, as Powers could not get sustained pressure or quality shots on Enright. The scoreless game came to an end 7 minutes into the 3rd period as a point shot from DCD defenseman Noah Thewes, found a way through several players and Zloto making it 1-0 . The closest Powers would come to scoring was a redirected shot from Tim Washburn that found the right goal post with 4 minutes left in the game. Powers fate was sealed as they were called for slashing with less than a minute left in the game. DCD scored on the ensuing face-off in the Powers zone, this time DCD defenseman Gino Sessa ripped a shot that beat Zloto making the final 2-0 DCD. Powers would be out-shot 15-6 in the third period and for the game 45-13.

Powers Coach, Travis Perry commented that “DCD is always a great challenge for us. We played them pretty even for most of the game. Proud of our guys and Zloto for hanging in there tonight!”  Powers will be Home vs. Tri-Valley, Monday night at Iceland- 5:30pm.
