Johnson’s journey from Midland Dow to Wilkes University

This week, Joey Johnson’s (Midland Dow, 2019) verbal commitment to Division-III Wilkes University was confirmed, as the former Charger is slated to join the program next fall.

Johnson was a three-year standout in the Saginaw Valley Conference, scoring 26 goals and 72 points in 74 career games for Midland Dow. During his senior season, the 5-foot-11 defender spent the fall playing in the Michigan Developmental Hockey League (MDHL), was named Second-Team All-State in Division-III in the regular season, and then after that, patrolled the blue line for Team Michigan at the 2019 CCM NIT.

Following graduation, Johnson played his first season of junior hockey in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL) at the Junior-B level for the Leamington Flyers. After one season, he returned to the States in 2020-21 to play Tier-III junior hockey for the Metro Jets in the USPHL Premier. Johnson led Jets defensemen in scoring with eight goals and 36 points in 41 regular-season games as the team finished first in the Great Lakes Division.

Wilkes University is a member of the United College Hockey Conference (UCHC), where the program finished third in the regular season and was knocked out of the conference tournament in the semifinals. Johnson will become the second MI-HS alum to suit up for the Colonels, joining Taylor Bommarito (Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, 2014) who played in the program’s first two seasons.
