White Lake Lakeland Beats Troy Athens 3-2 In Overtime

Jake Lennard nails a goal as White Lake Lakeland puts the squeeze on shooters to prevail

Jake Riutta netted the game-winning goal with 4:18 left in overtime, as White Lake Lakeland triumphed over Troy Athens 3 - 2 at Lakeland Arena on Wednesday. White Lake Lakeland and Troy Athens both scored one goal to end the first period tied. Both teams scored one goal in the second period and remained tied. The second period closed with both teams at two goals a piece. Both teams failed to score in the third period so they remained tied, sending the game into overtime. In the overtime, White Lake Lakeland scored one unanswered goal to finally get the win.

In the first period, Troy Athens's Tony Gaioni got the puck past goalie Adam Szymanski with 5:57 left in the period. Nathan Gurzell and Chris Capaldi assisted on the goal. White Lake Lakeland's Jake Lennard got a goal with 4:35 left on the clock. Joey Blackwell and Garrett Unsworth assisted on the goal, to tie up the score. In the second period, Troy Athens got things going when Nathan Gurzell lit the lamp without assistance, with 7:24 left on the clock, going ahead for the win. White Lake Lakeland made it happen on the ice when Nolan Johnson put the puck between the pipes with an assist from Billy Schroeder, with 1:05 left on the clock, to bring the game to a tie. In overtime, looking skyward, White Lake Lakeland's Jake Riutta put the puck between the pipes with an assist from Garrett Unsworth with 4:18 left on the clock, to get ahead and win. This sealed White Lake Lakeland's victory.

Jake Lennard, Nolan Johnson, and Jake Riutta each added one goal for White Lake Lakeland. Garrett Unsworth got two assists. Blackwell and Schroeder each tallied one assist for White Lake Lakeland.

Nathan Gurzell got one goal for Troy Athens and also had one assist. Tony Gaioni added one goal for Troy Athens.

Leading the way for White Lake Lakeland, Adam Szymanski stopped 21 out of 23 shots to earn the win. Despite a super performance, Troy Athens's Jeff Merola had 35 saves and got the loss.

Contributing to their win, White Lake Lakeland was 1-for-6 on power plays. Troy Athens was 0-for-4.

Troy Athens finished the game with a record of 6 wins and 14 losses.
