The Bay Area Thunder hockey team scored three goals in the second period, and held on for the 5-4 win over Midland Dow on Monday in the Division 2 regional quarterfinals at the Saginaw Bay Ice Arena. Lucas Refail and Connor Monaghan each scored two goals to lead the Thunder (17-9-1), while Sam Gaffney added one goal and one assist. Jayson Wiitala made 43 saves on 47 shots to record the win. "We made our shots count," Thunder assistant coach John Ioannidis said. "We were very limited in our shots, but we made them count and that was a big production for us. Jayson (Wiitala) had to be the player of the game today. He really stepped up in facing that many shots and keeping us ahead the whole time." Senior forward Jackson Storer scored two goals and added one assist to lead Midland Dow (17-8-1), while Alex Ferrell added two goals. Seamus Belisle made seven saves on 12 shots. "We pretty much controlled the entire game except for a few minutes," Midland Dow coach Dick Blasy said. "They did a nice job of blocking shots in their zone, and they took advantage of their opportunities, especially during that stretch in the second period. We outshot them 51-12, but we weren't able to capitalize." Blasy credits his team's work ethic as a key to the successful season. "It was a great group of guys to work with, and they were hard-working guys," Blasy said. "It was a hard-hat and lunch pail type of family this season and it was a lot of fun to coach them. We have 14 players coming back, plus some talented JV players who will get a shot as well." The Thunder advance to face Saginaw Heritage (13-12-1), who defeated Midland 6-4, in the Division 2 regional semifinals on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Saginaw Bay Ice Arena.
