Four Mustangs score in Victory!

The Southwest Michigan High School Hockey League regular season ended last week and the League Tournament started on Monday. Based on their regular season performance, both the Portage Central Mustangs and Kalamazoo United earned a spot in the Tournament Semifinal game.

These two teams played for the second time in a week as the Mustangs blanked United 3-0 last Wednesday and this game looked to have a similar result from the beginning.

The first period was a goaltender’s duel as Mitch Kihm of Kalamazoo United was shelled with 20 shots, but played well and only gave up one goal. United was able to put 7 shots on Mustang goaltender Alex Hufford, but they were quality scoring chances. Twice Hufford made the initial save, then had to slide quickly across the crease to stop a back door shot into an open net by a United player.

The Mustangs finally broke through and opened the scoring as Drew McNassor and Mitchell Ely worked the puck around the boards late in the first period and eventually out to Jack Sproule in the slot who was able to chip the puck into the net.
