Junior Hockey Roundup

Plenty of alums have really started to make an impact in their respective junior leagues, as several players lead their teams -- and even their leagues -- in scoring.

There are more than 100 MI-HS alumni continuing their playing careers post-high school. With the Junior Hockey Roundup, we highlight some of the standout performances in various junior leagues from across North America over the weekend.

In the USHL, Quinn Preston (Trenton, 2015) put on a show Friday night against Central Illinois as he scored two goals and two assists in Dubuque’s 5-2 win. The NCAA Ohio State commit added another assist on Saturday, as the Saints won 6-3 and Preston boosted his season total to three goals and six points in six games.

Colin Bilek (Brighton, 2015) leads the entire NAHL in scoring after a four-point weekend. He picked up two points on consecutive nights and sits atop the league with 24 points in 20 games. Conversely, his Northeast Generals teams is in first place in the league with 28 points in the standings as well.

The league’s defending Robertson Cup champion, Lone Star swept Odessa in back-to-back games over the weekend. That came thanks in large part to the team’s leading scorer Julian Biondo (Utica Eisenhower, 2015). The Shelby Township native picked up an assist in the Brahmas’ 2-1 overtime win on Friday and then added three assists in Saturday’s 4-1 win, boosting Biondo’s total to 17 points.

Those victories came at the expense of the Jackalopes leading scorer, Evan Rochowiak (Detroit Catholic Central, 2015). He had the lone goal in that overtime loss for Odessa, giving Rochowiak a team leading seven goals and 14 points.

Shreveport is in first place in the South Division despite a loss on Friday. The loss also ended a four-game point streak for the Mudbugs’ leading scorer Brendan VanSweden (East Kentwood, 2015). The 6-foot-1, 200-pound forward was held without a point for the weekend for the first time this season, yet still sets the pace for Shreveport with 12 points in 13 games.

A few other notable performances in the NAHL this weekend, Vince Marino (Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, 2016) had an assist and iced the game away for Brookings on Friday with an empty-net goal. He added another goal the following night as the Blizzard swept Austin in consecutive games.

Brett Abdelnour (University Liggett, 2016) scored the lone goal in a 1-0 battle on Saturday between Corpus Christi and Amarillo. Abdelnour’s second goal of the season came at 4:21 of the second period gives hims three points in the Bulls’ last three games.

In the AJHL, Conner Jean (Brother Rice, 2015) scored the first goal of the game for the Brooks Bandits as they went on to defeat Drumeller 5-2 on Saturday. Jean went on to add another goal and an assist to earn his third three-point game of the season.

The CCHL’s leading scorer Samuel Knoblauch (U-D Jesuit, 2016) put together his finest performance of the season thus far, lighting up the Navan Grads for two goals and five points in Carleton Place’s 6-2 win on Friday. That extended his point streak to seven games and gave Knoblauch 12 goals and a league-best 36 points in 23 games.

Austin Stauffer (Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, 2016) leads his NOJHL teammates with 12 goals and 20 points this season. The Bloomfield native has a point in four straight games -- and seven of the last eight -- as Cochrane is 4-1-0 in the last five games Stauffer has produced a point.

Owen Kipke (Detroit Catholic Central, 2015) picked up two assists on the power play for the Soo Eagles. He added a goal the following night, giving Kipke a three-game point streak and tallies in six of the last seven games. The Eagles are 10-6-0 which is good for just fourth place in the West Division. However, no team has played fewer games at this point in the season either and Kipke’s Eagles are 8-2-0 in their last 10 games.
