Players getting streaky and piling up points throughout many North American leagues

There are more than 100 MI-HS alumni continuing their playing careers post-high school. With the Junior Hockey Roundup, we highlight some of the standout performances in various junior leagues from across North America over the weekend.

In the NAHL, Adam Pitters (Grosse Pointe South, 2017) extended his point streak with goals in back-to-back games for Aberdeen. The NCAA Bowling Green commit scored his first of the weekend on the power play and followed up with a second goal the following night, giving Pitters a point in four consecutive games.

Vince Marino, NAHL Brookings BlizzardVince Marino (Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, 2016) saw his six-game point streak come to an end on Friday. However, he bounced right back with a big power-play goal the next night as Brookings got the 5-3 win over Janesville. Marino now has eight goals and 16 points in 21 games.

Arguably the biggest performance of the weekend, Nick Bowman (Brother Rice, 2016) posted back-to-back three-point games in Coulee Region’s weekend series. Bowman had three assists in the Chill’s 7-1 win on Friday and tallied two goals and added another assist in the team’s 4-3 shootout loss on Saturday. He leads Coulee Region with eight goals and 16 points.

Connor McGinnis (Detroit Country Day, 2017) scored his first-career goal in junior hockey, helping Minot to a 4-3 overtime win against Fairbanks on Saturday. That goal gives the defenseman three points in 19 games for the Minotauros.

With under five minutes left in regulation on Saturday, Austin Bottrell (Farmington Hills United, 2015) scored his third of the season, tying it at 3-3 between Lone Star and Corpus Christi. Bottrell’s goal would help lead the Brahmas to a victory in a shootout, giving him a point in five of the last six games and seven of the nine games he’s played in the 2017-18 season.

Over in the BCHL, Shawn O’Malley (Cranbrook, 2015) helped the Victoria Grizzlies to an important 6-3 win with his second goal of the season on Saturday. That puts Victoria just one point out of first place in the Island Division and O’Malley now has eight points in 15 games for the Grizzlies.

Hayden Taylor (Detroit Country Day, 2016) extended his point streak to a robust 13 games on Sunday. The 6-foot-4 forward continues to pick up points as his Islanders Hockey Club continues to pick up wins, as they have won 13 consecutive games to go along with Taylor’s impressive point streak.

Both alums representing in the AJHL had productive weekends, as Nick Blankenburg (Romeo, 2016) and Connor Jean (Brother Rice, 2015) posted big performances for their respective teams.

Jean tallied a hat trick on Friday, helping the Brooks Bandits to 5-1 win over Canmore while Blankenburg produced points in three consecutive games over the weekend for Okotoks. Blankenburg’s Oilers and Jean’s Bandits stand in first and second place respectively in the Viterra South Division.

Joel Frazee (Wyandotte Roosevelt, 2016) moved from one team to another in the CCHL, going from Hawkesbury to Kemptville. He has played four games with the 73’s, scoring a goal in three of those outings and helping the 73’s to a win over his former team on Sunday. That gives him a total of six goals and nine points in 22 games this season.

In the NOJHL, Austin Stauffer (Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, 2016) picked up five points over the weekend for Cochrane. He had a goal and two assists in the Crunch’s 5-1 win over Espinola and added another goal and assist two nights later in a 7-2 win over French River. Stauffer leads the Crunch with 18 goals and 33 points in 25 games.

Bobby Price (Sault Ste. Marie, 2017) scored the first and second goals of his junior career, just 2:12 apart from each other in the third period of the Soo Eagles’ 7-1 win over Blind River. Price now has 12 points in 23 games for the Eagles.

There are more than 30 different junior leagues across North America and these are just some of the more prominent performances over the weekend from our MI-HS alums. Check back next week, as we continue to track these and many more players furthering their hockey careers post-high school.
