BURTON - Luke Evo and Sam Lechel were tough enough for opponents to handle when they were playing on separate lines for Flint Powers Catholic's hockey team.

But now that they're skating together?

Well, that's been spelling double trouble for opposing goalies.

Chelsea discovered that the hard way Saturday, when Evo and Lechel both recorded hat tricks during an 8-2 romp in a battle between top 10 Division 3 teams at Crystal Fieldhouse.

Evo, a junior, scored twice in the first period and once in the second to help Powers take a 4-0 lead 2:29 into the middle frame before Lechel took over, scoring two more goals in the second and one in the third as Powers improved to 10-0-2.

"We play well together," said Evo, who leads the Chargers with 13 goals after recording his first hat trick of the season. "He switched onto my line and we've been playing good so we're keeping at it.

"We just read each other good. We know where each other are going. We understand each other, how we play."

Lechel, a senior, recorded his second hat trick of the season, giving him 12 goals - second among Chargers behind Evo.

Although they rank 1-2 in goal scoring for Powers, there's no friendly rivalry between Evo and Lechel. Both say it's all about team success.

"He's a year younger than me but we're friends," Lechel said. "We get along good so the chemistry is good. Luke's always been a good player. He always finds the back of the net pretty good."

Evo also drew three assists to give him a team-leading 27 points in 11 games.

Luke Evo had three goals and three assists in Powers Catholic's 8-2 win over Chelsea.

"He's one of the better juniors in Michigan," said coach Travis Perry. He's right up there with the best juniors, I would think.

"Those two guys (Evo and Lechel), they've played together three or four games in a row now and they've responded. They're tearing it up right now.

"That's the good thing about this team, the guys are pretty unselfish. As long as they're winning, that's all that matters to these guys."

Powers outshot the Bulldogs 11-3 in the first period en route to a 3-0 lead and the Chargers were up 5-0 before Chelsea's Braden Steele ended Adam Cantley's shutout bid midway through the second period.

Powers, which is ranked No. 2 in Division 3 and No. 10 in all classes, also got goals from Evan Babka and Cameron Conover in winning its fourth straight game.

"I thought we had a great start," Perry said. "Putting three in the first period kind of deflated anything they had going. We had a couple of bad games in a row - I say bad; we won 4-2 - but I thought we responded well in our last game and the guys played well today."

How well?

"It was definitely the best game of the year for us," Evo said. "We were working, we were moving, we were hitting guys. We were putting the puck in the net like we should."

Wes Hansen scored the other goal for Chelsea, which saw its record fall to 8-3-1. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 6 in Division 3.
