Bad luck: Gremlins fall to Highlanders, lose tournament title game

HOUGHTON — Despite a solid effort from the locals, the Houghton Gremlins could not keep the visiting Howell Highlanders from becoming the 10th team to win the MacInnes Holiday Classic with a 3-2 victory Friday at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Howell’s Dominic Girardin scored what stood as the game-winning goal 9:02 into the second period off a pretty passing play.

“It was a very evenly-matched game,” said Howell coach Eric Hirzel, whose team had its best showing at the Classic in four trips. “We went end-to-end with them, and in the second period, we had some penalty trouble. They crept back in (and) really battled hard in the third. They had some good chances.

“The guys worked their butts off. I really hand it to Houghton. They played a tough game, (but) we came out on top and I’m glad we came out with the win.”
