Lancers hockey coach sees goaltending as key to team’s prospects

FRASER — The Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse hockey team features three senior goalkeepers, and coach Jason Kowalski believes their leadership and play will factor heavily into his team’s fortunes this season.

Kowalski called all three netminders — Sean Korpal, Dakota Richardson and Alec Johnson  — solid leaders who know what they need to do to get ready for every game. Korpal was the starter last season but is out until December. Johnson served as the team’s backup last year, while this is Richardson’s first year with the Lancers, which went 9-14, 4-4 in the Macomb Area Conference White Division last season.

“They’re the quarterbacks (on the ice),” said Kowalski, whose team allowed 3.92 goals per game in 2013-14. “They’re screaming at the defenders when someone has the puck near the net. If there’s a shot, they’re yelling out which corner the puck’s going into.

“(Goaltenders) are the catalyst for your team. You build a successful team from the net out. We’re lucky to have three good goalies.”

Netminding will be vital because, Kowalski said, L’Anse Creuse (0-0 at press time) is built to grind out wins. The team averaged 2.72 goals per game last season.

Kowalski said the Lancers will have to outwork the competition, get shots on goal, capitalize on chances and be solid on the power play.

“When we have the man advantage, we need to put the puck in the back of the net,” Kowalski said.

The L’Anse Creuse coach is excited about his team’s prospects. He said having an experienced team — seven seniors and seven juniors who were all on the squad last season — is important. Kowalski said understanding the rigors of a full varsity schedule is important.

“We’re pretty excited about our chances this year,” Kowalski said. “We’ve got a lot of experience, and I think these guys are hungry.”

Kowalski said he thinks the MAC White will be a grind. Anchor Bay joins the division after winning the last two MAC Blue titles. Marysville joins the league after some time in the MAC Red. Kowalski said Utica High always gives his team fits.

“But the goal is to win the MAC White and advance as far in the playoffs as possible,” Kowalski said. “We had a tough loss against (Macomb L’Anse Creuse North in the playoffs) last year, and we’re looking to avenge that.

“I’m looking forward to the season. These kids make it even more exciting.”

L’Anse Creuse next takes the ice for a matchup against Anchor Bay at 6:45 p.m. Dec. 5 at Fraser Hockeyland.
