Saginaw Heritage 5, Midland Dow 4: Final period finishes with comeback victory

The Saginaw Heritage boys hockey team jumped out early on Midland Dow, but the Chargers made a decisive showing in the second period only to be shown up in the third as Heritage earned a 5-4 comeback win on Saturday night.

After scoring all three of its second period goals on the power play, Dow looked like it had a good grasp on the game before the start of the third.

"It was really the penalties that hindered us in the second period," Heritage coach J.J. Bamberger said. "We came back together on even strength in the last period to get back ahead."

One minute in to the third period Heritage scored to get back into a groove, followed by two more goals to take the lead in the last six seconds of the game thanks to Gavin Dietrich's final goal to earn the win.

After getting the puck deep into Dow territory with the help of a strong forecheck, Heritage got a shot on goal which rebounded off the Dow netminder, sending the puck to Dietrich's stick to find the back of the net.

Chris Cornford helped lead Heritage with three goals and one assist on the night, while Brandon Ashley added one goal and two assists in contribution.

"Cornford has been scoring a lot and was doing very well tonight," Bamberger said. "He has definitely been capitalizing on his chances all year."

In goal, Devin Wolfgang put together a strong effort to keep his team in the game with his 20 saves.

Moving forward, Heritage plays again on Friday in the Traverse City Tournament.
