Fight for Creuse Cup

01/18/14

By: Joe Backlas

The stage was set for a tense game this past Saturday as the Lancers of L’Anse Creuse and the Crusaders of L’Anse Creuse North played the ninth annual Creuse Cup.

The game began with an aggressive Lancer offense dominating the puck. An early goal by #19 Nichols Ferrand put the Lancers in the lead, and the offense continued to push. Later in the period, however, the Lancer’s momentum was stifled by several penalties. Some great defense and stellar goalkeeping by #30 Sean Korpal kept the Crusaders scoreless for the remainder of the period.

The deep rivalry between the two teams finally showed itself in the second period. After a some pushing and shoving on the ice, #2 Lukas Vore of the Lancers and a Crusader defender started a grudge match on the ice. Tensions and egos flared and the match became more than a simple hockey game. Both teams picked up the pace, and late in the period, #28 Joey Carollo of the Lancers knocked the puck in for a L’Anse Creuse score.

As the final period began both teams began to lose discipline in their play. Penalties abounded throughout the period for each side. However, this didn’t prevent #5 Brendon Morfino of the Lancers from putting up another score midway through the period. More solid defense kept the Crusader attack to a minimum, and the game ended with a Lancer win 3-0.

The battle for the creuse cup is a special match for both teams. It was especially important for senior #14 Jake Amato of L’Anse Creuse. He was dedicated to playing to the max in his final bout for the Creuse Cup, and he felt, “Good to win his senior year.” Simple words, but true. Amato played very well that game coming up with many key hits and drives that broke down the Crusader defense as well as collapsing any attempts for a Crusader score. Other notable players included #30 Sean Korpal for his shut-out goal keeping, as well as scorers #19 Nicholas Ferrand, #28 Joey Carollo, and #5 Brendon Morfino.

Romeo has easy time with L'Anse Creuse, 6-1

The Romeo Bulldogs defeated the visiting L’Anse Creuse Lancers, 6-1, in MAC White Division hockey Friday night at Suburban Ice arena, strengthening the Bulldogs early-season strangLehold on the division lead.

Coming off last year’s record-setting season for wins, and with a slew of steady seniors, Romeo was the pre-season favorite to win the division this year.

Friday night, the Bulldogs (11-1-1 overall, 5-0 league) showed the future, as well as the present, is very bright, as they were led by a trio of sophomores, Logan Jenuwine, Nick Blankenburg and Blake Gabler.

Blankenburg led the way, scoring a natural hat trick in the third period to seal the deal for the Bulldogs.

Gabler and Jenuwine each chipped in a goal and assist, along with steady play on both ends of the ice. Forward Matteo Mazur contributed three assists for the Bulldogs.

The play of the sophomores was no surprise to Romeo coach John Minjoe.

“That’s not the first time this year they’ve come up big,” Minjoe said. “They are a great group. Logan has been strong for us all year. As for Nick, he has so much natural ability. He’s a smaller player, but he plays big. He definitely plays above his size, as he showed tonight.”

Jenuwine got it all going for Romeo by sandwiching the first period with a pair of nifty plays that gave the all Bulldogs and their boisterous student section all the momentum they needed.

It started with some nifty puckhandling on a power play five minutes into the opening stanza.

After carrying the puck behind the Lancers net, Jenuwine snuck a pass out front that Gabler banged home for the opening goal to put the Dawgs up, 1-0.

Jenuwine’s goal came with a little over four minutes left in the first period. With the Lancer applying pressure, Romeo’s Matteo Mazur pushed the puck out near the point from the Romeo end.

Jenuwine picked it up, tapped it past the Lancer defensemen, then carried it into the Lancers zone, unassisted, where he made a nice left deke before pulling the puck back to his right and slipping it over the leg of the goalie.

The Lancers (7-7, did have several chances of their own in the first period.

At the 7:20 mark, L’Anse Creuse forward Brendon Morfino displayed his own sophomore prowess, sliding the puck between a Bulldog defender just inside the blue line and skating in alone on Romeo All-State goalie Nick Santi (17 saves on the night), who stonewalled him with a nice glove save.

A few minutes later, demonstrating his two-way abilities, Morfino made a nice defensive stop inside his own zone on Romeo’s Hunter Jenuwine to stop a possible Bulldog scoring chance.

“Brandon had a terrific game. He really made his presence felt,” coach Jason Kowalski said. “Overall, I was really pleased with our team effort.”

Morfino’s efforts were rewarded early in the second period, when he took a L’Anse Creuse senior captain Dante Bartolomeo incerpted a pass inside the Rome end and fed the puck Morfino, who this time beat Santi with a shot to lower right side, pulling the Lancer within one goal, 2-1.

Romeo’s Mitch Pacitti staked Romeo to a two-goal lead a few minutes later with a goal assisted, again, by Mazur.

The third period belonged to Blankenburg. The undersized forward scored a natural hat trick, including an unassisted goal from the point on a shot went over Lancer goalie Sean Korpal’s right shoulder.

Blankenburg’s first goal of the period was assisted by Gabler and Mazur. It was Mazur’s third assist on the night.

Romeo’s next game is against perennial state power Davison. “This will be an excellent test for us,” Minjoe says.

Meantime, L’Anse Creuse takes on cross-town rival L’Anse Cruese North for the Creuse Cup. “It’s a big rivalry,” Kowalski says. “We’re hoping to rebound with a win.”
