There are more than 100 MI-HS alumni continuing their playing careers post-high school. With the Junior Hockey Roundup, we highlight some of the standout performances in various junior leagues from across North America over the weekend.

Beginning in the USHL where there are currently 11 MI-HS alumni active in the United States’ top junior league. The preseason is now in full swing with many players vying for roster spots. In Fargo’s opener against Sioux Falls, 2016 Mr. Hockey Logan Jenuwine (Romeo, 2016) scored the first goal of 2017 for the Force, shorthanded and unassisted. He would add a second goal five minutes later, this time on the power play as Fargo went on to win 4-1 on Friday.

In the NAHL — where the league prominently displayed all 23 teams at its annual showcase in Blaine, Minn. — several MI-HS alums also displayed their talents for college and pro scouts in attendance.

Conor Witherspoon (Flint Powers, 2017) recorded his first-career point for Amarillo on Thursday. Then 8:37 later, he scored his first-career goal in the NAHL as the Bulls beat the Minnesota Wilderness 6-2.

The following night, his Amarillo teammate Brett Abdelnour (University Liggett, 2015) produced a multi-point game of his own in dramatic fashion. With an assist in the first period, Abdelnour scored a power-play goal in the final minute of regulation, proving to be the game-winner as Amarillo topped Bismarck 3-2 on Friday.

The Northeast Generals swept through the showcase with four wins on consecutive days, thanks in part to captain Colin Bilek (Brighton, 2015). On Thursday, the 5-foot-10 forward scored two goals including the game-winning goal in the Generals’ 5-3 win over Coulee Region.

After spending the last two seasons in the AJHL, Evan Rochowiak (Detroit Catholic Central, 2015) made the jump to the NAHL in 2017 with Odessa. The change has been a productive one so far, as he’s recorded a point in four of the team’s first five games. Over the weekend, Rochowiak produced two multi-point games and leading the Jackalopes with seven points.

Two of Rochowiak’s high school teammates also shared in some weekend successes.

Andrew Lane (Detroit Catholic Central, 2015) and Ryan Burnett (Detroit Catholic Central, 2015) reunite as teammates in juniors for Shreveport after the weekend, the Mudbugs are enjoying a five-game winning streak. Lane has three assists in the team’s last four games while Burnett scored two power-play goals in Shreveport’s 4-0 win on Friday.

One other notable from the NAHL Showcase, Logan Neaton (Brighton 2017) recorded his first-career win in his first-career start for Fairbanks, making 21 saves in the Ice Dogs’ 4-2 win over Corpus Christi.

Looking towards Canada, Conner Jean (Brother Rice, 2015) returns to the AJHL for a second season with the Brooks Bandits. A recent NCAA Holy Cross commit, Jean posted back-to-back three-point nights against the Calgary Mustangs and currently leads his team in scoring with five goals and eight points in the Bandits’ first four games.

The other MI-HS alum active in the AJHL, Nick Blankenburg (Romeo, 2016) is off to a great start to his junior career. After graduation, Blankenburg spent a season with T1EHL Victory Honda’s U-18 team before landing with the Okotoks Oilers. The 5-foot-9 forward began the AJHL season with a goal in each of his first three games as the Oilers open up with a 4-0-0 start.

In the CCHL, Sam Knoblauch (U-D Jesuit, 2016) and Jack Clark (Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, 2016) highlighted the six active MI-HS alums in the league.

Knoblauch scored one goal over the weekend, extending his point streak to eight games. That run would come to an end on Sunday for the Rochester native, who has six goals and 15 points in the Carleton Place Canadians’ first 10 games. Knoblauch currently ranks third in the CCHL in points.

Clark — Knoblauch’s Carleton Place teammate — picked up the first goal and assist of his young junior career on Sunday with strikes just 11 minutes apart.

William Vanderveen (Brother Rice, 2015) may have had the most fruitful single-game performance of the weekend, picking up four assists in the OJHL on Saturday. The 6-foot-6 defenseman helped Mississauga route Milton 7-1, and Vanderveen now has six assists in the last five games.

A four-game point streak in the NOJHL came to an end on Friday, but Austin Stauffer (Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, 2016) didn’t let the drought last long. In the following game, Stauffer recorded an assist in the first period of Cochrane’s 4-1 win over Blind River, bringing his total to four goals and eight points in the team’s first six games.

There are more than 30 different junior leagues across North America and these are just some of the more prominent performances over the weekend from our MI-HS alums. Check back next week, as we continue to track these and many more players furthering their hockey careers post-high school.
