With the conclusion of the 2022 Draft, teams across the National Hockey League are now in the process of hosting development camps for prospects and free-agent invitees.
Michigan high school hockey is represented in four of the development camp rosters, while some teams have yet to announce official participant lists.
The Winnipeg Jets - NHL parent organization of former Brighton High School goaltender Logan Neaton - are not hosting a development camp this year, as well.
Here are the four high school hockey products who are skating with NHL clubs this July:
Breazeale received a free-agent camp invite from the Arizona Coyotes, and he’s taking advantage of it. The Grandville High School alum just wrapped up his freshman season at the University of Maine, where he recorded 16 points in 33 games, along with a +2 rating. A 2000 birth-year defenseman, Breazeale spent three seasons with the Shreveport Mudbugs of the NAHL after his high school career, serving as a two-time captain before making the jump to the NCAA in 2021-22.
Before he heads to Dartmouth, Cooper Black is spending some time in Alberta as a free-agent camp invite of the Calgary Flames. The Alpena High alum, a goaltender who checks in at 6-foot-8, headed to the NAHL’s Maryland Black Bears after dominating at the high school ranks. This year, he tended to crease duties for the Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL, where he recorded a 24-7-1 record and a .924 save percentage in the regular season, before a 12-3-1 record and a .935 save percentage in the playoffs.
He already has seven NHL games under his belt, but the Blue Jackets have Blankenburg - a free-agent signee following his senior season with the University of Michigan - at this year’s development camp as an elder statesmen. Blankenburg, a Romeo High School alum and ’98 birth-year defenseman, captained the Wolverines to the Frozen Four this past season before suiting up for Team USA at the IIHF World Championship.
He will be suiting up for Northern Michigan this fall, but before that…Vegas. Hartland product and former Mr. Hockey winner Joey Larson is skating with the Golden Knights as a free-agent invitee after rising through the junior ranks. In 2019-2020, Larson skated for the Chiliwack Chiefs of the BCHL; in 2020-21, he split time between the USHL’s Lincoln Stars and the NAHL’s New Mexico Ice Wolves. This past season, he earned a spot with the Muskegon Lumberjacks, and he posted 66 points in 61 games with his in-state USHL club.
