Byron Center among big movers in latest release

A group of coaches from the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches’ Association (MHSHCA), collaborate to produce Top-10 Rankings during the regular season. Representatives from around the state submit their ballots —  on a bi-weekly basis until Jan. 1, and a weekly basis after the New Year — to rank the top 10 teams at the Division-I, Division-II and Division-III levels. Additionally, a Super 10 is assembled, ranking the top 10 teams in the state overall. 

The latest rankings have been posted, and here are some of the most notable changes in this update:

M-1 United cracks the Top 10 in Division-I

Improved to 4-0-0, adding three wins to their resume since the release of the initial rankings on Nov. 20th. M-1 United is averaging five goals per game, while allowing just 1.25 goals against. Junior forward Charlie Price’s four-goal game put an exclamation point on the Griffins’ 6-0 shutout of Novi on Saturday.

Top Five in Division-II Unchanged, Allen Park Climbs to No. 6

While the top half of the Division-II rankings remained unchanged, the second half of the Top 10 saw a significant surge from Allen Park, who moved from ninth to sixth. A 5-1-1 record on the season, with four of those wins coming since the initial rankings release. Since tying Riverview Gabriel Richard in a rare 0-0 stalemate, the Jags have averaged 4.6 goals per game, including a 7-1 outing on the road at Mona Shores on Saturday.

Bay Reps Climb To No. 2 in Division-III

One of six programs in the state to start 5-0-0 or better, the Bay Reps moved up to No. 2 from the 4th spot in the previous rankings. Senior forward Grant Lucas leads the state in scoring with 14 goals and 19 points, while teammate Ethan Coleman leads the state in assists with 12. They will be one of the 12 teams participating at the D3 Challenge in Gaylord this weekend, set to take on Division-II No. 9-ranked Bay City and Division-III No. 5-ranked Grand Rapids Catholic Central.

Byron Center Bumped Up to No. 5 in the Super 10

The biggest mover among all rankings was Byron Center in the Super 10, going from 9th to 5th in the latest poll. Improved to 6-0-0 after winning a pair of games on the road over the weekend. The Bulldogs have three wins over ranked opponents — Livonia Stevenson, East Grand Rapids and Salem — and have had 10 different skaters find the back of the net through the early stages of the season. Senior Cade Pratt’s 10 assists rank second in the state currently.
