One final week of action before the holiday break

There are more than 100 MI-HS alumni continuing their playing careers post-high school. With the Junior Hockey Roundup, we highlight some of the standout performances in various junior leagues from across North America over the weekend.

With one final weekend of games before most junior leagues break for the holiday, we start with NAHL action and C.J. Regula (Cranbrook, 2016) at Corpus Christi. In Saturday’s game against Odessa, the 6-foot-3, 190-pound defenseman doubled his point total on the season with a three-point night in the IceRays’ 7-3 win. Regula now has six points from the blue line in 30 games this season.

After entering the lineup in mid-October, Austin Bottrell (Farmington Hills United, 2015) has been a steady contributor for Lone Star. On Friday, Bottrell picked up his 13th and 14th points of the season against Shreveport, assisting on consecutive goals just 5:13 apart in the third period. The Brahmas came away with a 3-0 win and Bottrell continues to climb up the team’s standings, now sixth in Lone Star scoring this season.

Speaking of Shreveport, the Mudbugs may have been shut out that night but Saturday and Sunday proved to be far more productive, scoring 11 total goals in two games against Amarillo. Ryan Burnett (Detroit Catholic Central, 2015), Andrew Lane (Detroit Catholic Central, 2015) and Brendan VanSweden (East Kentwood, 2015) were at the forefront of that offensive surge, combining for three goals and four assists.

It took 17 games, but Jay Keranen finally picked up his first point of the BCHL season with Pring George. He recorded the primary assist on the Spruce Kings’ first goal of a 3-1 win against Coquitlam on Friday. The 5-foot-11 defenseman had 10 points in the NAHL last season.

In the AJHL, Nick Blankenburg (Romeo, 2016) was in on all three goals for Okotoks’ 3-2 win over Bonnyville, tallying three assists on Friday. He now has points in five straight games for a total of eight goals and 24 points in 33 games this season.

Joel Frazee (Wyandotte Roosevelt, 2016) continued his hot streak with a goal in each of Kemptville’s three games last week. He has a point in nine consecutive games for a total of 13 goals and 21 points this season, with 15 of those points coming in the last 15 games.

In the SIJHL, Alec Daman (Chelsea, 2016) snapped an 11-game scoreless drought with a goal on Saturday, helping Thief River Falls to a 6-3 win over Thunder Bay. Daman now has seven goals and 16 points in 29 games.

C.J. Bradburn (Ann Arbor Pioneer, 2015) had his most productive week of the NOJHL season, scoring a goal and three assists in three games for Timmins Rock. Bradburn now has seven goals and 16 points in 36 games up front.

Interlochen, Mich., native Jake Saxton (Traverse City West, 2015) added two assists in the Soo Eagles’ 7-0 route over French River. The 20-year-old forward has five goals and 16 points in 24 games for the Eagles.

There are more than 30 different junior leagues across North America and these are just some of the more prominent performances over the weekend from our MI-HS alums. Check back next week, as we continue to track these and many more players furthering their hockey careers post-high school.
