On Thursday, Ron Wade put together a three-point performance in Clarkston’s 7-5 win over Salem. It was Wade’s 100th, 101st and 102nd points of his three-year career for the Wolves. 

The next night, Cade Pratt scored two goals and added two more assists in Byron Center’s 6-1 win over Rockford on Friday. His four-point performance gave Pratt an even 100 career points in three seasons for the Bulldogs. In doing so, he joined fellow teammate Jackson Froysland, who joined the century club just three weeks earlier. 

Just a few hours after Pratt, Ben Lavalley scored with 1:38 left in the second period of Marysville’s game against Utica Eisenhower on Saturday. That mark gave Lavalley 100 points in his career.  Still a junior, the Vikings forward became the ninth player in Michigan High School Hockey to reach the mark this season.

While history was going down at Suburban Ice Macomb, Brandon Davila was adding to the historic night 60 miles southwest in Chelsea. The four-year senior scored a goal and added two assists, giving him — that’s right — 100 career points.

Three days. four players. Same milestone.

In total, 10 players have reached the career milestone this season. Lavalley is the fourth underclassmen to join the 100-point club, following Divine Child’s Braeden McNamara, Tawas' Gage Maxfield and Wade from Clarkston. Maxfield was the first junior to hit the milestone when he scored a goal and an assist on opening weekend. He’s second in the state among active leading scorers with 121 career points, behind a pair of Brighton teammates.

Cam Duffany’s 132 points are the most among any player in Michigan high school hockey currently. Lane Petit trails his Bulldogs teammate and fellow senior with 115 points. Brighton’s tandem and Byron Center’s duo may not be the only teammates to reach the mark together either. Chelsea seniors — and ironically, also nicknamed the Bulldogs — Keegan Montgomery is likely to join Davila, sitting at 97 points. Additionally, Maxfield's teammate and upperclassman, Kyle Indreica, reached 100 points near the end of last season.

Grosse Ile’s Tate Hubler — who’s recorded a point in every game this season — stands at 114 career points currently. He joined the 100-point club on Dec. 2nd, in his third of six multi-point games this season.

The 2023-24 season is the 50th season of MHSAA hockey. It’s quite fitting that in such a historic season, we’d see so many players hit such an important career milestone. But where does this put players like Duffany and Wade and McNamara among the list of top scorers all-time?

In short, not even close.

This is no sleight to any of these players, whatsoever. Rather illustrating some of the top names in MI-HS hockey from the 70s and 80s.

Doug Wood is the all-time leading scorer in Michigan state history with 372 career points. His 127 points during his junior season for University Liggett is more than any active players’ career total, aside from Duffany (132). Wood followed up that ‘89-90 campaign with an almost equally impressive senior year, totalling 125 points. Neither of those single-season totals come close to Ron Rolston though.

In ‘83-84, Rolston scored a state record 94 goals in a single season, and finished with an astounding 157 points for Flint Powers. He shattered the previous record at the time, held by his older brother, Greg Rolston (125 points), who set the mark one season earlier.

No player has cracked the Top 10 in career points since 1991. And, with rules changes like the eight-goal mercy limit as well as just general level of competition across the board, it's not likely that any player will come close to reaching the 275 points needed to break into the Top 10. 

Calumet’s Dean Loukus ended his four-year career in 2021 with 225 points in 100 games. He posted back-to-back-to-back-to-back 40-point seasons, finishing his senior season with 74 points. Loukus is likely the closest in recent memory. He’s currently an assistant captain in the OHL for the Saginaw Spirit.

The 100-point mark is significant in Michigan high school hockey. It takes a high level of consistency over an extended period of time to achieve the feat. One that should absolutely be celebrated across the state. If anything, we may need to install a ‘Modern Era’ wing of the MHSAA record books sheerly because the game is so much different now than it was 30-plus years ago.
